Viogenesis Cholestromol is a nutritional supplement for a specific medical purpose. It contains as active ingredients phytosterols and vitamins A and E and aims at the dietary management of hypercholesterolemia. The product owes its dietary action to the phytosterols and plant extracts it contains.
Plant sterols are found in vegetable oils and cereals. Consumption of 800 mg per day helps maintain normal blood cholesterol levels (These are official health claims from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)).
Plant sterols have a similar chemical structure to cholesterol, affecting its reabsorption by the gut. Cholesterol is normally excreted in the intestine through the bile to aid digestion and is then reabsorbed and enters the bloodstream. Plant sterols compete with cholesterol for reabsorption by the gut, reducing its levels.
