The artichoke is a plant that grows mainly in southern Europe and North Africa. The flowers of the artichoke is common cabbage, but the rest of the plant has excellent properties as a healing herb. 

Two components, the kynarini and skolymosidi has proven to stimulate the secretion of bile which is consistent with the traditional use in the treatment of liver failure and incomplete digestion. 

The kynarini proven to reduce levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. 
In a double blind study conducted by scientists in Germany, placebo-controlled, found that artichoke extract which was administered for 6 weeks significantly reduced total cholesterol by 18.5% and LDL cholesterol by 22.9%. No adverse effects associated with the use of the artichoke. The way in which the artichoke lowers cholesterol is not fully known. It should be possible to indirectly interact with the same protein that interact statins. Called HMG CoA reductase and has a very important role in the production of cholesterol.
